Can the FedEx Cup save golf?
May 28, 2007

Since the era of the modern superstars of the 1990’s, the PGA Tour golf season has been suffering from a lack of interest from the superstars once the winner of the PGA Champion hoists the Wanamaker Trophy. The problem with dis-interested players is dis-interested fans, and dis-interested sponsors. We have heard plenty of whining from players about participating in late season events like the Ryder Cup (remember David Duval’s suggestion of paying Ryder Cup players) and Presidential Cup events. We have witnessed Phil Mickelson skipping the PGA Tour owned and operated Tour Championship.
Along comes the Fedex Cup, the PGA Tour’s version of the playoffs. Can it save the golf season? A carrot with $10M dollars attached is dangling in front of 70 of the season’s best performers. Will Woods, Mickelson or VJ Singh care enough to compete if they are the ones holding the for mentioned Wanamaker Trophy?
The 4 major championships are owned and operated by 4 distinct organizations, separate from the PGA Tour. Each one steeped in tradition and lusted after by all the players. In fact, the current crop of top 10 stars build their schedules around these championships. Can the FedEx Cup change the greats of this age?
